Colliery Headframe Project

Most of the colliery buildings will be from the Bachmann Scenecraft range, any othes needed will be scratchbuilt using 3mm foamboard.
The Bachmann colliery headframe and sheaves need some serious surgery, it is very crude as it comes from the box, because of this I have decided to build a new headframe, this will be built from Plasticard, Evergreen and Plastruct profiles.

The Bachmann headframe with winding wheels (sheaves) removed, these will be fitted to the new headframe when built.

Front view of the partly assembled headframe, this has been constructed from Evergreen profiles comprising of H beams, I beams and L section all in different sizes.

Front view of the completed headframe,
about a weeks work here. The frame still needs painting and weathering. If you decide to build a headframe for your colliery don't forget to add a flagpole!
The headframe will be painted Matt Black.

Above, some of the parts cut for the new headframe, top deck and four of the six support legs.

The partially built headframe with the sheaves temporarily in place, the structure still needs the rear angled stabilising legs fitted and the bracing fixed to all the legs, again using Evergreen L and C sections.

This is a rear view of the completed headframe, the steps and handrail on the rear right leg are scatchbuilt. I was going to buy Plastruct steps but thought they might not fit properly as they are inclined at 45 degrees whereas the rear legs are not. The next job is the pithead building which I will construct from 3mm foamboard.
The colliery headframe has been constructed using 2mm plasticard, Evergreen C H I and L section profiles.
The steps are actually the second set I made, the first set I made were way oversized.
