Planning and building of a model Colliery
in 00 Gauge

The Latest North East Colliery News

Why build a colliery
I realised that I would need a colliery on my layout because the 'Blyth Cambois Maintenance Depot also incorporated the West Blyth coal exporting staithes so obviously the coal has to come from somewhere.
There were three collieries local to West Blyth, Ashington, Ellington and Lynemouth, I chose Lynemouth for my colliery because as a youngster I was able to get a ride on a Class 37 loco taking empty 21 ton coal hoppers from West Blyth lower reception sidings to Lynemouth Colliery then back to the Blyth Power Station complex.
When completed, the colliery could be a layout in it's own right!
The exact colliery dimensions are not yet known as I'm still busy with other parts of the layout but I am hoping to have three tracks under the washery/screens and up to six fulls departure lines, six reception lines for empties as well as a runround line and brake van siding.
Apart from the pithead building all other buildings used will be from the Bachmann Scenecraft range.
